Privacy Policy — Webmarka WCAG Audit

Last updated: 26 September 2026

Webmarka WCAG Audit is a Chrome extension that scans the page you open against WCAG 2.1/2.2 Level A and AA success criteria and produces a review report. This policy explains what data the extension processes, where it is kept and why each permission is needed.

What data is processed?

  • Scans run only while the side panel is open, and only in the active tab: a scan starts automatically when you open the panel with the extension icon and, if the “scan automatically” setting is on, when the tab or page changes. With the panel closed the extension reads no pages and collects no browsing history.
  • A report contains: the page address (with query parameters and fragment removed), page title, scan time, viewport size/zoom, for findings: CSS selectors, element type, a short element name (alt, aria-label, title, placeholder, field name, file name or at most 50 characters of visible text), a safe element summary (attributes such as id/class/role/alt/aria) and measured values (e.g. colour codes, contrast ratio, target size), the axe-core engine’s English explanation, your state note, your manual decisions and rationale, and an optional reviewer name.
  • Not stored in raw form: values typed into form fields, password field contents, cookies, the page’s full HTML and URL query parameters. A one-way digest of the full URL is kept locally to distinguish reports for different query/fragment states. Short page-provided text and attributes may contain personal information, so review a report before exporting it.

Where is data kept?

  • All reports and settings are kept only in your browser, in chrome.storage.local. At most the 50 most recent reports are kept.
  • The extension sends no data to any server and contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code. The scanning engine (axe-core) is bundled in the extension package.
  • Export (HTML/JSON) downloads a file to your computer only when you press the button.
  • You can delete reports one by one in the panel or all at once with “Delete all saved reports”. Uninstalling the extension also deletes all data.

Why are permissions needed?

Permission Why
activeTab To get temporary access only to the tab where you clicked the extension icon.
scripting To load the scanning engine into the active tab while the panel is open and to mark problem elements on the page with numbers. Marks are visual only, do not change how the page works, and are removed when the panel closes.
sidePanel To show the report in a panel that stays open next to the page.
storage To store reports, manual decisions and settings on this device only.
Optional site access Requested only if you press “Allow access to …” in the panel, and only for that site; saves frequent auditors from clicking the icon each time. Can be revoked in Chrome’s extension settings.
